We are busy checking out and compiling some of the more useful and unusual sites of this nature found online.   • One of the main styleguides used in academic writing, the Modern Language Association (MLA) has an excellent site with lots of resources about the Association and its work.
  • Garbl's Writing Center is a large, rambling assemblage of various writing and editing resources.
  • Yes, my friend, even as persnickety a subject as grammar can be entertaining and enlivened by the right master. Grammar Girl is truly such a master.
  • Quality writing often starts with knowing how to ask questions and listen to the answers. I have used this Step-by-Step Guide to Oral History for years as an invaluable guide for conducting interviews.

  • Dictionary.com in addition to a first-rate dictionary and thesaurus, there are a crossword and crossword solver, translator, word games and tools.
  • The Free Dictionary is a comprehensive collection of English and foreign language dictionaries, thesaurus, specialized dictionaries, acronyms and abbreviations, idioms and literary reference.
  • Urban Dictionary is a great resource for current and past slang expressions.
  • For literally hundreds of special glossaries and dictionaries, check out the Glossarist.
  • Sometimes nothing beats a pithy quote from a luminary to make your point BrainyQuotes is a wonderful compilation of quotations in various categories.

  • Verbivore is Richard Lederer's site for wordaholics, loglepts and verbivores. Lerderer is a prolific writer and expert on the history of linguistics and other language matters.
  • Illiterate Businesses—a rant blog about error-ridden signage.
  • If you ever need to rant to a live audience, this is the place for you. American Rhetoric lists several departments with lots of resources for speech writers.
  • Christina Laun has put together a list of the Top 100 Creative Writing Blogs.
  • A googlewhack is an unusual two-word phrase that, when entered in Google turns up one and only one page in the search result.
  • If limericks are your thing, you'll enjoy The Omnificent English Dictionary In Limerick Form (OEDILF) , whose goal is to write at least one limerick for each meaning of each and every word in the English language. Truly a noble endeavor! Long live the limerick.
  • A very high quality resource site that is nevertheless very difficult to categorize, The Burry Man Writers Center features an enormous amount of links to practical information and an option to connect to writers and content creatives from around the English-speaking world.
  • The Eclectic Writer—once you get past the atrociously inelegant web design and adjust to the garish colors and amateurish layout, you'll discover lots of interesting things relating to writing and the craft.
  • Random Word and Random Image Generator generates a random word, shows the definition and displays the first google image result for that word. In the words of the coder, "If you are experiencing writer's block this site can be extremely useful. Just look at the word/image that appears and write the first thing that comes to mind. Try not to think too much, it's a bad habit."
